Computer networks allow sharing and central management of information, resources and applications across multiple devices in a scalable, secure manner. Computer networks are a vital part of modern society and offer numerous benefits, including improved communication and collaboration as well as lower costs, increased security and accessibility to data and resources.

Links and nodes are the two main elements of the network. Nodes are network devices, such as computers, printers and file servers that communicate with one another using the set of standard rules called communication protocols. Links connect these nodes via wired or optical connections. A laptop that communicates with local networks via Wi-Fi is a node (DTE) and a link (DCE). Network switches and routers function as traffic cops, directing data streams to their destination efficiently.

A wide-area network (WAN) makes use of bridges and gateways to connect several local area networks. Like a LAN however the WAN is connected to the Internet and other networks for global communication. For instance, students from Florida can connect to peers in Tokyo using their computers thanks to a WAN and bridge that connects them.

Computer networks facilitate work processes and encourage collaboration and participation in the workplace. Employees can save their documents to a server that is regularly backed-up, instead of sending documents back and forth which could result in losing documents. They can also easily access standard versions of the customer or employee manuals via the network, which guarantees consistency and accuracy.
